Advocacy Committee Education Program has become one of our hallmark programs, providing annual community lectures that include San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium updates, American College of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) updates, as well as the Wellness Lecture Series (originated in 2009). We provide community talks with world renowned clinicians, scientists, health care advocates and specialists in their fields. All lectures are free to the public and are held in different locations throughout southern California.

Research Program funds small seed grants that are innovative and can lead to advancing research. This funding will put investigators in a position to apply for larger grant funding from federal, state and private sources. The first research project funded is Effects of Pharmacological Gonadal Suppression on Neural Activity During Emotional Encoding: an fMRI Study through University of California, Irvine (UCI). This addresses the issue of the effects of sex hormones, brain activity and memory "chemo-brain".

Advocacy Program targets survivors and supporters who are interested in advocacy on a one-to-one basis or targeting a more global audience. Every year advocates receive scholarships to attend the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in San Antonio, Texas and to the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund's (NBCCF) Annual Advocacy Training Conference and Lobby Day in Washington, DC. The advocates' reports are available on our website and presented at community lectures. BCCRF sponsored an Advocacy Training Workshop in March 2009 and again in March 2010, as part of the Wellness Lecture Series. As a result of the advocacy training workshops and scholarships, advocates are helping women in their communities and becoming involved with scientific grant review at the California Breast Cancer Research Program and the federal Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program.

Minorities Outreach Program addresses issues in the minority communities. The first project was producing an informational brochure that was handed out during Breast Cancer Awareness Month with every transaction at all NIX Check Cashing locations, mostly in underserved areas. As the program continues to develop, we continue to partner with organizations of these diverse populations. We meet with community organizations as well as Congressional and State legislative district offices to discuss collaborative programs and events.

Young Women's Program addresses issues of breast cancer survivors who were diagnosed before menopause. The initial group was formed at a Summertime Tea in the summer of 2007. The goals of this committee were to advise directions for program development and to form their own support group. The success of this program has lead to the next steps of involving other young breast cancer survivors and the development of a mentoring program for this population.
